They look compatible, but count different events: the percentage records matches with at least three total goals; the average may count only that team’s goals. A “No” in an over column means the result falls under that line. BTTS asks a different question: did both teams score? It ignores the total beyond that condition. Thus, 1–1 qualifies for BTTS but stays under 2.5, while 3–0 goes over 2.5 but fails BTTS.

Equal percentages can also hide different patterns. Two teams may each record over 2.5 in 60% of ten matches, yet one may produce several 3–0 results while the other produces 2–1 and 2–2 scorelines. The first profile is one-sided; the second more often involves both attacks.

Finally, a historical 60% rate means six of the measured ten matches qualified. It is not automatically a 60% probability for the next fixture; opponent, venue, team selection, competition, and sample size may all differ.

The three results all count as under 2.5, yet only one is a goalless draw. Likewise, the 1-0 and 2-0 winners improve their clean-sheet rates, while the losing teams add failures to score.

This distinction changes the conclusion. A high under-2.5 rate suggests low match totals, but does not identify which team suppressed scoring. Clean-sheet and failure-to-score rates reveal that team-specific split; the 0-0 rate isolates matches where neither attack succeeded.

Overall averages can hide meaningful home-and-away differences.

A fixture should normally match the home side’s home record against the away side’s away record. Combining all venues may blur relevant patterns: a team averaging 1.7 goals overall could score 2.1 at home but only 1.3 away. Three reference points answer different questions:
