The result definition matters too. Under the usual market rules, 1–1, 2–1, and 3–2 count because both sides scored; 0–0, 1–0, and 0–3 do not. BTTS means “both teams to score.” The percentage shows how often both sides scored at least once within a chosen set of eligible matches. It is a frequency measure, not the average number of goals scored.

The calculation is:

BTTS percentage = (matches where both teams scored ÷ eligible matches) × 100

For example, suppose a team has ten eligible matches. If both teams scored in six of them, the calculation is:

(6 ÷ 10) × 100 = 60%

The team therefore has a 60% BTTS rate for that sample. This does not mean there is a 60% certainty that the next match will produce goals for both sides; it only describes the recorded results.

A match qualifies as BTTS when the final score includes at least one goal for each team. Scores such as 1–1, 2–1, and 3–2 count, while 0–0, 1–0, and 0–3 do not. The winning team and total number of goals are otherwise irrelevant.

This is why a high-scoring match can still fail the BTTS condition. A 5-0 result contains five goals, but all five belong to one side. By contrast, 1-1 qualifies with only two goals because each team contributed.

3-0 is BTTS No; 2-1 is BTTS Yes. Both matches contain three goals, but only one has a scorer from each team.

Irregular results can change both the numerator and denominator.

The standard BTTS calculation covers 90 minutes plus referee-added stoppage time. Goals scored in extra time do not usually count, and penalty-shootout kicks are never treated as match goals. For example, a knockout tie that finishes 0-0 after 90 minutes and 1-1 after extra time normally remains BTTS No for the regular-time market.

Knockout competitions can create confusion because some statistics pages display an “after extra time” score, while others record the 90-minute result separately. Each leg of a two-legged tie is generally treated as its own match, regardless of the aggregate score.

Irregular fixtures need closer inspection:

  • Postponed matches are normally absent from the sample until they are played.
  • Abandoned matches may be excluded, retained at the score when play stopped, or updated later to the official result.
  • Awarded matches and walkovers may be omitted or entered using an administrative score such as 3-0.

Every figure can be correct. The last-10 sample reflects recent form but may combine league, cup, and European fixtures—or even cross a season boundary. The season figure reaches further back, while the league-only filter removes six cup matches from this example’s denominator.

Venue filters narrow the sample again. Here, the team’s home matches produced BTTS more often than its away matches, despite both splits belonging to the same league campaign.

Friendlies create another source of disagreement. Some databases include preseason games in “all matches,” while others restrict statistics to competitive fixtures. Different season definitions, postponed fixtures, and recently promoted teams can also change how many matches qualify.

Small samples deserve caution: one extra BTTS result changes a 10-match rate by 10 percentage points, but a 30-match rate by only about three points. When comparing free sites that publish team BTTS data, stronger sources clearly display the date range, competitions, venue, match count, and whether friendlies are included.

Historical record or match projection?

Similar-looking figures can answer different questions.

A percentage beside a team name often describes a historical record: the share of eligible past matches in which both teams scored. If seven of the last ten matches qualified, the displayed rate is 70%.

An upcoming fixture’s “BTTS 70%” may be constructed differently. A provider might combine the home team’s home split with the away team’s away split, blend scoring and conceding rates, or use a proprietary model involving form, expected goals, or betting odds. Unless the method is published, it should be treated as an estimate rather than a simple past-match rate.

Read the figure in context

Several factors can make an apparently strong percentage less persuasive:

  • Small samples: Seven BTTS results from ten matches are less stable than 35 from 50.
  • Opponent quality: Results against weak attacks or fragile defences may not transfer to tougher fixtures.

    Divide BTTS Yes results by eligible matches, then multiply by 100. Seven Yes results from 12 matches gives 7 ÷ 12 × 100 = 58.3%.

  • Investigate any mismatch

    Check missing fixtures, different filters, extra-time treatment, and the provider’s rounding convention.

A whole-number display may show the same example as 58%.

Conclusion

A BTTS figure is reproducible only when its fixture list and eligibility rules are known. Count first, divide second, and round only at the end.
