Since its inception in 2004, the EFL Championship has produced numerous memorable moments.

As the second most popular secondary league in the world (after 2. Bundesliga), the Championship launched many players to stardom.

Over the years, we’ve seen legendary players such as the great Ross McCormack make history and amazing young stars such as Tammy Abraham honing their skills.

The EFP Championship has always been a breeding ground for success.

Young stars and surplus-to-requirements players from Premier League clubs are often sent to the second-tier English league to get minutes and hopefully reinvent themselves.

The process is more often a success than failure, with many loanees driving their new clubs to Premier League promotion.

Championship Top Goal Scorers

Let’s take a look at the top all-time goal scorers in the Championship.

Ross McCormack

Ross McCormackThe Glasgow-born deadly striker left his mark in the Championship by bagging 120 goals for different clubs.

After starting his career in Scotland with the Rangers, McCormack was drawn by English football and signed for Cardiff after a few solid seasons at Motherwell.

As soon as he arrived at the Championship, he became an instant hit.

McCormack stayed in Cardiff City for two seasons before moving to Leeds United where he would blossom into a top-tier striker.

He ended his Leeds career with 54 goals in 155 appearances before moving to Fulham where he was equally efficient.

Currently a free agent, McCormack tops the list of Championship goal-scorers.

He’s still only 33 years old and may be signed by any Championship club, so we think we might not have seen the end of Ross McCormack yet.

David Nugent

In 2005, he moved to Preston North End and enjoyed a few good seasons before joining Portsmouth.

Nugent brought his goalscoring abilities to every club he signed for, bagging 120 goals in the EFL Championship just like McCormack.

His qualities even brought him a national call-up in 2007 and he scored a goal on his debut.

Sadly, he never played for England again.

Now 34, Nugent signed for Preston North End once again, so he may yet improve his goal-scoring record.

He’s surely eager to shatter McCormack’s record and become the top all-time goalscorer in the Championship until other players overtake him.

Billy Sharp

Billy Sharp

Billy Sharp is a Championship and Football Manager legend with 114 goals in the EFP behind his name. Often dubbed the greatest striker in second-tier leagues, Sharp is still going strong at the age of 33.

He currently plays in the Premier League for Sheffield United.

Sharp scored a total of 56 goals in 95 appearances for Scunthorpe United and became somewhat of a legend in English football. He was sold to Sheffield, yet his first spell at the club wasn’t that successful.

After a few spells in other clubs including a solid 3-year run at Doncaster Rovers, he eventually found his way back to Sheffield United in 2015.

In 2018, Sheffield United was promoted to the PL for the first time since 2007.

During one of the first games in August, Sharp equalized for Sheffield against Bournemouth which was his first goal in the Premier League.

Interestingly enough, Sharp is the leading goal scorer in English league football in the 21st century with 220 goals.

At the moment, Ollie Watkins leads the list of top scorers with Borja Baston closely behind.

Players such as Steven Fletcher and Aleksandar Mitrovic have scored more than a few times for their respective clubs as well, so the race for top 19/20 EFL Championship is going to be heated.

Watkins is already making headlines at the age of 23 and if he tops the goalscoring chart this season, you can bet that big clubs will come calling for sure.
