Half boundaries

Halftime scores invite confident predictions from evidence that may be thinner than it feels.
At 0–0 after 45 minutes, a late goal can start to feel inevitable. If two goals have already gone in, the opposite story takes hold: the match is open, so more must follow. Both reactions are familiar—and both can be misleading.
Football memories tend to preserve dramatic turnarounds, late winners and wild scoring runs, while routine finishes fade quickly. That makes a handful of memorable matches feel like a dependable pattern. The real question is whether first-half scoring changes what happens next, or whether selective memory simply supplies convincing examples after the fact. A useful answer needs broad results, not just the matches that were exciting enough to remember.
Half boundaries

Total goals
The raw number scored in each half across the selected matches. It shows volume, but comparisons become misleading when samples contain different numbers of matches.
Goals per match
Half-specific goals divided by matches played. This normalizes sample size and answers how many goals an average match contributes to each half.
Match-occurrence rate
The percentage of matches with at least one goal in the half. A 2–1 second half and a 0–1 second half both count as one occurrence, despite different totals.
Boundary cases
A goal recorded as 45+2 belongs to the first half; 90+4 belongs to the second. Extra-time goals and shootout kicks should be excluded unless the analysis explicitly covers them.
Compare like with like: the same competition scope, date range, match status, and number of fixtures. Postponed or abandoned matches need a stated rule.
A higher second-half total does not automatically mean second-half goals occur in more matches. Report totals, goals per match, and occurrence rates separately.

A population tendency can be strong while remaining weak for one fixture. At halftime, the score, red cards, team strength, substitutions and match incentives may matter more than the historical 44:56 baseline. The baseline is best treated as a starting expectation, not a match-specific prediction.
A modest second-half tilt has several plausible explanations, but match data alone cannot show which one caused a particular goal. The mechanisms also overlap: a tiring team may lose shape just as an opponent introduces fresh pace and takes more risks.
As the clock runs down, a level or trailing score becomes less acceptable. Teams may push full-backs higher, add attackers, press more aggressively, or play forward sooner. Those choices can create chances at both ends: the chasing side commits numbers, while the leading side gains space for counterattacks and transitions.
Halftime gives coaches a natural point to adjust marking, pressing triggers, buildup routes, or set-piece plans. Later substitutions can sharpen those changes. A fresh winger facing a fatigued defender is an obvious example, although substitutions may also be defensive and reduce scoring.
Fatigue can slow recovery runs, weaken concentration, and stretch distances between midfield and defense. As structure loosens, turnovers are more likely to become dangerous transitions. Yet fatigue is difficult to isolate from tactics, scoreline, player quality, and match intensity.
The second half also often has a slightly longer scoring window. Substitutions, injuries, VAR checks, and time-wasting tend to produce more added time than in the first half. A goal marked “90+4” still belongs to the second half, giving that period extra minutes in which to score.
No single factor needs to dominate. The pattern may emerge from several small effects reinforcing one another.
A match does not become open simply because the second half has started. The scoreline, competition format, and value of the result often determine whether teams attack aggressively or protect what they already have.
Consider four matches reaching the 70th minute:
These situations occur at the same point on the clock but create very different scoring environments. Even an early goal can reshape the entire match: the leader gains an incentive to control space, while the trailing side must gradually take more chances.
This also complicates simple first-half versus second-half comparisons. Later goals may reflect mounting urgency in close matches, but second halves are not automatically more attacking. A comfortable lead, a mutually useful result, or severe consequences for conceding can keep play controlled until the final whistle. Time influences behavior mainly through what the remaining time means for the score.
A league’s overall style can shape the split. Competitions featuring cautious openings, deep defending, or strong benches may lean toward later goals; leagues with aggressive pressing and uneven defensive quality may produce more early scoring. Climate, fixture congestion, and refereeing tendencies can also influence tempo and fatigue.
Team-level figures require even more care. A side’s apparent tendency may disappear after a coaching change, formation switch, major injury, or transfer-window turnover. Comparing recent form with season-long patterns is useful, but five matches should not outweigh a large, relevant sample unless there is a clear reason the older data no longer represents the team.

The strongest comparison therefore uses matches from the same competition, era, and tactical context. Broad historical averages remain a sensible starting point, while team trends deserve weight only when the sample is both substantial and still representative.
Use one fixed sample and preserve the underlying match records so the calculation can be checked or repeated.
Take all 1,140 Premier League matches from 2021–22 through 2023–24: 380 per season. Archive the event source and retrieval date; include regulation play only, excluding abandoned matches and any extra time.
Assign 45+ stoppage-time goals to the first half and 90+ goals to the second. Record each half’s actual duration from half-end timestamps; if those are unavailable, use 45-minute denominators and state that added-time exposure is omitted.
For an illustrative 2,200-goal sample with 1,000 first-half and 1,200 second-half goals, the raw shares are 45.5% and 54.5%. If exposure totals 52,000 and 55,000 minutes, the rates are 1.92 and 2.18 goals per 100 minutes. Repeat both calculations for each season, then pool them.
Report the match count, goal count, excluded fixtures and exposure minutes alongside the results.
Three season-level estimates reveal whether the direction repeats, but small differences may still be sampling noise. Confidence intervals—or a simple match-level bootstrap—help show whether the apparent advantage is precise enough to take seriously.
A blank half does not force later scoring.
Halftime can change tactics, but low-event matches often stay quiet. The aggregate tendency says little about one remaining half.
Short runs can be ordinary variation.
A few unusual matches, red cards, or high-scoring teams can distort small samples. Longer periods and comparable competitions provide a sturdier test.
A known tendency may already be priced in.
Value depends on whether the offered probability is lower than a sound estimate after accounting for uncertainty and margin.
The broad comparison asks which half contains more total goals. First Half Over 0.5 asks whether at least one goal occurs before halftime. A league can produce more second-half goals while still landing the first-half measure frequently; the statistics are related, but not interchangeable.
Confirm half boundaries, stoppage-time treatment, and whether extra time is excluded. Do not mix goal share, goals per match, and the percentage of halves containing a goal.
Favor several seasons or a large competition sample. A short run can be dominated by a few unusual matches.
A team’s split matters only relative to the normal pattern in the same league, season, and competition format.
Review scorelines, red cards, home and away roles, tactical changes, squad turnover, and match stakes before treating the pattern as meaningful.
A recurring second-half share describes past scoring. Predictive value requires testing on later, unseen matches and against simpler benchmarks.
The first-half/second-half split is a useful starting baseline: it can reveal questions worth investigating about teams, leagues, or match states. On its own, however, it is not a reliable forecast for the next match.
