A single goal can legitimately appear in two different timing bands.
A goal scored just before half-time may be recorded as 45′, 45+2′, or simply “first-half stoppage time,” depending on the data source. Those labels describe match events, but they do not fit perfectly into rigid ranges such as 31–45 and 46–60.
The difference usually comes from the chart’s rules. One chart may place every first-half added-time goal in the 31–45 band; another may treat 45+1 onward as a separate interval or group it with a later numerical range. Even an unqualified 45′ can be ambiguous: some datasets mean the clock period from 44:00 to 44:59, while simplified records may use it for anything before the half-time whistle. The interval definition therefore matters more than the printed minute alone. Before comparing charts, it helps to check whether endpoints are inclusive and where each source assigns added time.
A goal-timing interval is a reporting bucket, not a reconstruction of play minute by minute. It helps summarize patterns in football goal statistics by placing several timestamps in one group.
A common layout uses 1–15, 16–30, 31–45, 46–60, 61–75, and 76–90 minutes. This is a convenient convention rather than a rule followed by every data provider.
Each source must decide which bucket receives a goal on an endpoint such as 15:00 or 30:00. Labels alone may not reveal that decision.
In many six-band charts, first-half stoppage-time goals join 31–45 and second-half stoppage-time goals join 76–90. Other charts create separate 45+ and 90+ groups, so the methodology matters.
The underlying record may still preserve an exact minute, second, or added-time notation. The interval is only the category assigned for analysis.
The cleanest approach is to define each band with both a lower and an upper limit. A right-closed scheme includes the upper endpoint but excludes the lower one:
Under this convention, a goal at exactly 15:00 belongs in (0, 15], not (15, 30]. Likewise, 30:00 belongs in (15, 30], and 45:00 belongs in (30, 45]. No boundary is shared, and none is left uncovered.
This matters when data sources use integer minute labels. The same source might display a goal as “15” even though its underlying timestamp follows a particular rounding or event-logging rule. Interval assignment should therefore use the source’s recorded value consistently rather than guessing from the display.
Added-time labels require a separate policy. A goal recorded as 45+2 is not the same boundary case as 45:00; it must either enter a dedicated first-half stoppage band or be assigned according to an explicitly stated aggregation rule.
State the intervals in notation, not only as labels such as “0–15.” Explicit endpoints make the count reproducible and ensure each goal enters exactly one band.
Under the usual interval convention, added-time goals stay in the final band of the half in which they occur. A goal at 45+2 therefore belongs in the last first-half interval—commonly 31–45—while 90+4 belongs in the final second-half interval, commonly 76–90. This keeps the bands aligned with football’s two-half clock and provides a consistent definition of what counts as a late goal.
The plus sign is not ordinary addition for interval assignment. 45+2 must not be rewritten as minute 47 of the second half. It means the goal occurred two minutes into first-half stoppage time; after the break, the displayed match clock resumes at 45:00, and the 46th minute begins in the second half.

Whichever structure is chosen should be stated explicitly. Mixing dedicated stoppage bands with ordinary final bands can double-count goals or make sources appear inconsistent.
Treat 45+2 as first-half added time, not as a second-half 47th-minute goal. The notation identifies both the half and the stoppage-time offset.
Using right-closed fifteen-minute intervals, representative timestamps map as follows:

The boundary cases show the endpoint rule clearly: 15 belongs to 1–15, 45 to 31–45, 75 to 61–75, and 90 to 76–90. The following minute opens the next band.
The distinction between 45+3 and 48′ is especially important. Adding the components of 45+3 produces 48, but the goal still occurred before half-time; 48′ denotes a goal after the second half began. Flattening both to the integer 48 would place two events from different match periods into the 46–60 band.
A reliable dataset therefore needs at least the displayed minute and the half or stoppage-time marker. The marker can later be folded into the parent band, but once discarded, the original match phase cannot be recovered.
The same goal may appear as “45+3”, 45, 48, or a timestamp measured in seconds. Those values are not interchangeable: each reflects a provider’s storage and display rules.
These differences can shift totals at 15:00, 45:00, and other boundaries. Flattening “45+3” to 48 also risks placing a first-half goal in a post-break band. Before using CSV goal data in a timing analysis, field definitions should be checked against several known events: an exact boundary, a first-half added-time goal, a second-half added-time goal, and a timestamp just below a minute change.
A reliable import keeps the raw value, the parsed match phase, and the derived interval in separate columns. That makes later corrections possible without rebuilding the dataset.
A field called minute may contain a display minute, elapsed minute, or capped value. Confirm its meaning from documentation and match logs before grouping events.
No interval layout is universally best. The appropriate scheme depends on what the chart or calculation is meant to reveal.

For comparing scoring between the two halves, added time should remain attached to the half in which it occurred. Moving 45+ goals into the second half may look tidy on a continuous clock, but it misstates the phase of play.
The selected convention should be written beside the result or in the methodology. Most importantly, it must remain unchanged across every team, season, and competition being compared. A less sophisticated rule applied consistently is usually more trustworthy than a refined rule used unevenly.

Say whether added time is absorbed into its half, reported separately, or excluded.
Separate extra time from regulation time unless the report clearly defines another treatment.
Confirm that all included bands sum to the reported goal total.
The governing rule is simple: added time belongs to the half that generated it. A separate stoppage-time category overrides that convention only when it is explicitly declared.
