EFL League One is the third tier of professional football - Top goal scorers in England, sitting just below the Championship and above League Two. Despite being two levels beneath the Premier League, it remains fiercely competitive and plays a crucial role in the English football pyramid.

The league was introduced in its current form - Football leagues premier league in 2004, following a rebranding of the Football League structure. However, its roots go back to the Football League Third Division, which was first formed in 1920. Over the decades, it has been the proving ground for future Premier League clubs and the stage for dramatic promotion and relegation battles.

Each season, 24 clubs compete in League One. The top two teams earn automatic promotion to the EFL Championship, while the clubs finishing 3rd to 6th enter the promotion playoffs—one of the most exciting fixtures in lower league football. Meanwhile, the bottom four teams are relegated to League Two.

Many well-known clubs have passed through League One, including Leeds United, Southampton, Leicester City, and Wigan Athletic. Some used it as a launchpad for top-flight football, while others experienced hard-fought climbs back from financial or sporting setbacks.
